Mysterious bird was related to the dodo

There’s only one remaining specimen of the Liverpool pigeon, an extinct bird that was last spotted in the 1920s. To learn more about the mysterious spotted green bird, researchers examined DNA from the 230-year-old specimen’s feathers, BBC reports. Their results, published this week in BMC Evolutionary Biology, show that the Liverpool pigeon was its own species and that it was related to the dodo.
