Mere presence of smart phone can lower quality of a conversation

It’s obviously impolite to use your phone while someone is talking to you face to face. Now, new research suggests that even if a smart phone isn’t being used during a conversation, its mere presence can lower the overall quality of a chat, Pacific Standard reports. Researchers broke 200 participants into pairs to have conversations and found that people rated their discussions as less fulfilling if a mobile device was out, according to the study published online this month in Environment and Behavior.
