Jupiter's moon Io is alive with fountains of lava

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have made a violent discovery: The volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io are much more active than previously thought. Over the span of 2 weeks, researchers observed three incredibly bright volcanic eruptions on Io. Unrestrained by Io’s low gravity, the lava from these explosions flew hundreds of miles into space, according to a NASA press release. The researchers hope that the findings, to be published in Icarus, will help them understand how these eruptions occur and how long they last.
