Earth is big, so if an asteroid hits, you probably wouldn’t be under it. But the biggest damage won’t come from the actual impact. Rather, depending on where the meteor strikes, it will come from wind or waves, according to a study published in the preprint archive arXiv. Scientists found that asteroid-induced shock waves and tornadolike winds would probably cost the most lives, with tsunamis posing another substantial threat, New Scientist reports. Fortunately, scientists are keeping watch with massive telescopes, and coming up with new ways to predict similar events that could end the world as we know it.
