Like having a brain in your fingertips

The skin on our fingertips isn’t just sensitive—it’s also smart. Rather than simply relaying raw sensory input to the brain, as has long been assumed, neurons in the fingertips also calculate when and how intensely an object is touched, and information about the object’s shape, a study published in Nature Neuroscience suggests. The discovery could help researchers develop more realistic treatments for people recovering from nerve injury, Forbes reports this week.
