Five hundred years after the Santa Maria was abandoned in the Caribbean, researchers may have finally located its remains. The site, just off the northern coast of Haiti, matches the area described in Christopher Columbus’s diary as the flagship’s final resting place, USA Today reports. A 15th century cannon and Spanish rocks nearby the underwater remnants offer further evidence that it’s the Santa Maria. The announcement of the find was made today in New York City and archaeologists plan to do a full excavation soon.
