An up-and-coming floating water treatment system can help clean up filthy rivers, lakes, and ponds, Fast Company reports. Created to be like miniature ecosystems in the water, the islands are home to native vegetation that promote biofilms—microorganisms that grow on the roots of plants in water that help break down and suck up pollution. So far, the natural-looking structures have been deployed in Finland, the Philippines, and China.
