Parents, it’s OK to let your kids get a little dirty—in fact, the dirtier the better. Exposure to specific bacteria during the first year of life, like those on cats, mice, and even cockroaches, may protect children from wheezing and allergies, The Daily Beast reports. After studying hundreds of kids, a paper—published online today in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology —found that those who were allergy- and wheeze-free were more likely to have grown up in homes with the widest variety of bacteria and the highest levels of allergens.
