A new lizard characterized by a pop of color has been found in Ecuador. Dubbed Alopoglossus viridiceps, it features a unique emerald green head and bright orange belly, National Geographic reports. Researchers happened upon the reptile while tromping through the Santa Lucia Cloud Forest Reserve, and subsequent DNA analysis revealed that it was an entirely new species. Described this week in ZooKeys, the lizard was found in a rapidly shrinking reserve; scientists suggest field surveys be upped to identify more new animals before the sanctuary disappears.
