Dutch are tallest people in the world, U.S. heights stagnate

Dutch men are the tallest group of people in the world, according to a centurylong study of 187 countries, BBC reports. The study, published in eLife, found that many of the world’s populations have gone through intense growth spurts (Japan, Iran, China), whereas others have gotten slightly shorter (Uganda, Sierra Leone), and still others have plateaued (South Asia, the United States). The researchers note that although genetics may account for some of what goes into making people tall, most countries with the tallest people, including the Netherlands, have access to good health care, nutrition, and sanitation. Some have also suggested that natural selection might be at work in the Dutch.
