Crows defeat 5-year-olds in test of wits

Just like in Aesop’s fable, the highly cunning New Caledonian crow has enough reasoning ability to drop rocks into tubes of water and raise the level of a floating snack. New research found that the species is also capable of solving the more complex “U-tube” task: plopping rocks into one container to raise the water level in another, National Geographic reports. In a paper published this week in PLOS ONE, the research team notes that the same task eludes most 4- and 5-year-olds.
