Can Plastics Cause Infertility?

In 2010, thousands of pigs mysteriously became infertile in farms across Spain, National Geographic reports. Now, researchers are pointing the finger at plastic bags used to store the semen that artificially inseminated all of those sows. They’ve found that certain chemicals within the plastic, including cyclic lactone and BADGE, can damage sperm’s DNA and lead to reproductive failure. The authors, who published their study in Scientific Reports, warn that some of those same chemicals can be found in food product packaging, like potato chip bags, and that humans may be facing a similar risk.
