California's 'walking' fish may be in trouble

A rare species of fish that’s frequently seen “walking” onto the shores of California might be in trouble, National Geographic reports. The grunion, or Leuresthes tennis, is most known for its peculiar mating ritual where herds of the fish leap onto shores between March and August to lay and fertilize eggs on the beach. But biologists are concerned; they’ve noticed fewer and fewer sightings of grunions these last several years. They suspect that hunting of the species has picked up and that growing beachside developments have reduced regions where the fish can spawn.
