The Buddy System Makes Cows Smarter

Two heads are better than one, particularly for cows. By conducting cognitive tests that measured how quickly holstein cows learned and adapted to change, researchers have found they are smarter when raised in pairs rather than individually. The study, published this week in PLOS ONE, suggests that farmers may benefit by housing their cows together to adjust faster to changes like new feeding and milking technologies.
