Baby brains grow 64% in first 90 days

Grow, baby, grow! Starting at 2 days old, infant brains experience an explosive growth spurt, reaching half their adult size within 3 months of birth, according to a study in JAMA Neurology. By scanning the brains of 87 healthy infants more than 200 times, researchers found that the infants’ brains grew 64% in the first 90 days, with the fastest growth in motor skill–related areas such as the cerebellum. The detailed new map of early brain growth in healthy babies could shed light on what goes wrong in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, BBC reports.
