Are you smarter than a fourth-grader?

The new voluntary U.S. education standards for reading and math, known as the Common Core, have generated a lot of controversy. Although states are free to develop their own curricula to meet the standards, testing what their students have learned is where the rubber really meets the road. This story in Education Week reports on a workshop for elementary school mathematics teachers in Maryland on those assessments and describes a problem that many of the teachers thought might be a stretch for their students.
