Thousands of dead fish floated to the surface of the ocean near southern California's Marina del Rey this past weekend. The eerie scene brought on a foul-smelling stench and cleanup crews ended up scooping up 175 114-liter bags of anchovies out of the harbor, LiveScience reports. Researchers think the mass of tiny fish became trapped in the area and suffocated. An increase of algae in the waters, which consume large amounts of oxygen, may have led to low levels of breathable air.
