ALS Ice Bucket Challenge goes viral among university presidents

Today, Massachusetts Institute of Technology President L. Rafael Reif stood beneath a catapult that had been rigged to dump a bucket of icy water on his head as part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that is sweeping social media. He was called out by Harvard University President Drew Faust, who took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Wednesday, surrounded by Harvard stem cell scientists working on ALS. The public relations gimmick has already raised more than $50 million for the ALS Association, which funds research and patient care efforts. The challenge has generated debate about its usefulness but seems certain to continue at high levels: Reif challenged California Institute of Technology President Thomas Rosenbaum; University of California, Berkeley, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks; and Brown University President Christina Paxson.
