Whale sharks can live up to 130 years

How long can a whale shark live? In the past, scientists have used growth rings from the vertebrae of the 20-meter-long, spotted animals to estimate a life span of about 70 to 100 years. But in a new study, reported in Marine and Freshwater Research, researchers used tape measurements, lasers, cameras, and mathematical equations to estimate that whale sharks can actually live as long as 130 years. That makes the animals one of the longest living sea creatures, Gizmodo reports. Other long-lived sea creatures include the green sea turtle, with a life expectancy of at least 80 years; the blue whale, with a life expectancy of 80 to 90 years; and the Greenland shark with a life expectancy of 400 years.
