Astronomers find black hole buried in giant star cluster

Astronomers operating the Very Large Telescope in Chile recently noticed an oddball star jerking back and forth, seemingly in orbit around an invisible object. On closer inspection, they discovered that the star was orbiting a black hole four times the mass of the sun, Newsweek reports. The black hole—which is buried within a giant cluster containing thousands of stars—marks the first time astronomers have detected a black hole with the help of an orbiting star. The discovery was published this month in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
