Did you know bees could be purple?

For many of us, conjuring the image of a bee involves yellow stripes and black stripes. But did you know bees could be purple? Earth is home to more than 20,000 species of bees that vary greatly in color, shape, and size, according to Inside Science, which published a short slideshow of some of these lesser known bees. Even more examples of these stunning photos, taken by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab in Beltsville, Maryland, can be seen on the lab’s Flickr page.
