France says ‘au revoir’ to plastic plates and cutlery

Much to the dismay of picnickers, France has become the first country to ban plastic cups, plates, and utensils, The Washington Post reports. Plastics cause problems in ecosystems when they don’t break down and animals mistake them for food, and they also affect climate change because of the millions of barrels of oil it takes to manufacture plastic bags and utensils. When the law goes into effect in 2020, plastic items will still be allowed if they’re comprised of at least 50% biodegradable material; by 2025, that number will rise to 60%. Perhaps there’s still hope for an environmentally friendly picnic setup after all!
