Nature videos—including scenes of rolling cerulean waves, snow-capped mountains, and dense evergreen forests—may be able to reduce violent behavior in prisons, The Washington Post reports. As detailed in a presentation at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention in Denver, inmates who watched the videos had 26% fewer violent infractions in prison. (These usually result in physical injury to officers or other inmates.) In follow-up interviews, 90% of inmates said the videos made them feel calmer, and 80% said that calm lasted for hours, improved their relationships with the jailers, and made serving time easier. Inmates’ favorite scenes were those that featured a mix of animal life, blue skies, and wide-open landscapes.
