You can now fly through Europe’s new x-ray tunnel

Europe’s new x-ray research facility has granted the wishes of those who want to fly—or at least pretend they can. A new YouTube video whisks viewers through the 3.4-kilometer-long tunnel that makes up the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) facility in Hamburg, Germany.  Set to open for research in 2017, the European XFEL will allow researchers to use the particle accelerator and x-ray combo to take 3D pictures of nanoparticles, film chemical reactions, and observe processes that happen deep inside planets, according to the facility’s website. More than a decade in the making, the project is currently supported by 11 countries across Europe.
