Mary Todd Lincoln may have suffered vitamin deficiency

Abraham Lincoln's widow has become well known today for her irritability and delusional behavior, but Mary Todd Lincoln's issues may have resulted from a now easily curable vitamin B-12 deficiency, The Washington Post reports. Pernicious anemia is known to cause irascibility and hallucination, as well as a litany of physical symptoms that Lincoln reported suffering, according to an article published last year in the journal Perspectives in Biology and Medicine. Though Lincoln was eventually institutionalized by her only surviving son, today pernicious anemia can be treated with B-12 shots or pills.
