Suicide Most Common on Two Days of the Week

After analyzing more than a million attempted suicides with poison—the most frequent method used in the United States—researchers have found that Sunday and Monday are the peak days for adults to undertake the act. The study, published in The Journal of Emergency Medicine, also reveals that New Year’s Day is the holiday associated with the highest number of suicide attempts. The researchers hypothesize that more suicides are attempted at the beginning of the week because the period symbolizes a “fresh start,” but depressed individuals believe their life circumstances remain unchanged and are disappointed.
