Silk Screws Repair Broken Bones

Metal screws have been used to repair fractures and broken bones for years, but they aren’t perfect; they lead to an increased risk of infection and poor healing. Researchers who have created sturdy biodegradable screws made entirely out of silk may have found an alternative, Gizmodo reports. In a study published yesterday in Nature Communications, scientists described how the screws were successfully tested in the hind limbs of rats and may serve as a more natural way to heal in future orthopedic procedures.
