The Department of Energy has set a deadline of 29 March 2010 for proposals for the Fuels from Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub—one of three new $122-million energy hubs funded in its 2010 budget. Funding opportunity announcements for the other two—the Energy Efficient Building Systems Design Hub and the Modeling and Simulation for Nuclear Reactors Energy Innovation Hub—are expected early next year.

Drug residues found in drinking water are an increasing focus of the EPA. "For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency has [in October] listed some pharmaceuticals as candidates for regulation in drinking water. The agency also has launched a survey to check for scores of drugs at water treatment plants across the nation," the AP says.

Campaigns are on to restore funding cut in the Japanese science budget.
