Roundup 12/21: Noxious Fumes Edition

As earthquakes, lava flows, and sulfur dioxide emissions increased on Mayon Volcano,

the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned that a major eruption could come within days as it recommended extending the evacuation zone. Institute volcanologist Edwin de la Cruz told ScienceInsider that any eruption would not match that of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, as the magma chamber is not as large.

Nongovernmental organizations are applauding an agreement last week between the EPA and three companies that make and import the flame retardant Deca to limit the use of the chemical. EPA says it has been "concerned about its impact on human health and the environment.”
