More From Francis Collins on God and Evolution

The scientific blogosphere, as well as the Washington, D.C., rumor mill, are buzzing this week about geneticist Francis Collins's latest project: a new foundation and Web site created "to engage America's escalating culture war between science and faith."

The religious beliefs of the former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, which he described in a 2006 book, rub many scientists the wrong way. Collins's recently launched Web site, which got a blast of publicity in the past week, is irking scientists as well. The site has also puzzled observers of Washington biomedical research politics, as rumors continue that Collins is the top candidate to lead the National Institutes of Health.

The new venture is funded by the Templeton Foundation, which supports research exploring the interface of science and religion.
