Law of the Liquids

Today is the birthday of Isidor Traube, a German physical chemist born in 1860 whose research helped lay down fundamental principles of liquids. He worked on osmosis and colloids, which are suspensions of nanometer-sized particles. To boot, Traube helped define the concept of surface tension and critical temperature, the point at which liquid and gas states of a substance are identical. Through his beakers flowed gastric juice, urine, blood, and milk. He also designed a viscometer for gauging viscosity and a capillarimeter that measured capillary action, the rising of a liquid through a narrow tube. Traube died in 1943.
