Special Online Collection: Gene Regulation

Jump to features in special collection:

Gene RegulationIn the 28 March 2008 issue, Science and its online sister journal Science Signaling examine the range of mechanisms used by cells to control the expression of their constituent genes. In Science, a series of Perspectives discuss the roles of protein transcription factors and noncoding RNAs in regulating gene expression, and the importance of other factors such as polymerase pausing and the spatial organization of chromosomes. A related News story explores the the roles of microRNAs in disease. In Science Signaling, three Perspectives discuss how an oncogenic protein directs the silencing of tumor suppressor genes, how intrachromosomal looping can stimulate gene expression, and how the abundance of a transcriptional coactivator affects nuclear receptor–mediated transcription. An online video presentation accompanies the special issue and highlights the central role of RNA in gene regulatory circuits.
