Science Functional Genomics
The Human Genome

Road to the Sequence

In the journal's 16 February 2001 special issue on the human genome, Science's News Department presented a timeline of some key events in the history of the human genome initiative, culminating in the publication of the draft sequence in Science and Nature. In these pages, we present an enhanced version of the timeline, including links to some classic research articles, reviews, and news coverage from the pages of Science (many of them previously unavailable on Science Online). Material from before 1996 is freely available to all users; full text of material from 1996 and later (except the Human Genome Special Issue) requires paid access to Science Online.

Clicking on selected regions of the timeline in the pages that follow will open up a new window, with links to additional material. Pre-1996 material is presented as PDF files, which require a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4.0 recommended).

To get started, click on the period of interest in the image below, or, to step through chronologically, select the "Forward" arrow.

Note: The presentation in these pages should function well for browsers higher than Netscape 2.0; JavaScript is also recommended, though not required. A text-based version of the timeline (which does not include links to material from before 1996) is available on Science Online; you can also browse a text-based list of links to the pre-1996 material available here.
