One evening in Phnom Penh, we joined a group of transvestite and transsexual members of the Women's Network for Unity who distribute condoms to sex workers in situ. In a dark park that abutted a large Buddhist temple, several women sat on the lawn, supposedly selling the oranges they had stacked in front of them. Gay male sex workers hooted at us from a fountain they had occupied. Other transgender sex workers who knew our hosts by name just popped out of the shadows, their hands outstretched for free condoms. |
