Doan Ngu, an official at the National AIDS Standing Bureau in Hanoi, traveled with us to his home town of Lang Son, which has one of the most serious HIV/heroin problems that I have witnessed. He took us to a dirt lot that used to be a primary school, but recently has become a favorite shooting den for heroin users. It's easy for the adults, too, I thought, noticing that both Ngu and I foolishly had on open-toed sandals.
