These women work for Jagruti Seva Sanstha, a nonprofit that does HIV/AIDS education in the Janawadi slum outside Pune, India. When I visit a new place and meet with groups, I often ask for a show of hands to see how many people know someone who has HIV or AIDS. It's not epidemiology, but this crude gauge quickly gives me a sense of how far HIV has spread in a community. |
