Macrophage and Bacterium
David Goodsell
This watercolor painting is the left panel of a triptych by David Goodsell that provides an interpretation of an immune-system macrophage engulfing a bacterium in the bloodstream. The cell's genetic material is depicted in red and orange; the cytoplasm in blue and mauve; membranes and inner transport organelles, or endoplasmic reticulum, in shades of green; and blood in brown and yellow. The work, designed for the entrance of the Center for Integrative Molecular Biosciences at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, was based on published data, electron micrographs, and other images.
