These nine species are dominant or subdominant at the Great Mountain Forest site in northwest Connecticut, USA.
Each tree is represented by a color-coded crown (cylinder) on a tree trunk. Several variables are displayed for each individual tree. The height, crown width, and crown depth are accurately depicted by the cylinder's shape. In addition, the light transmitted through the crown is illustrated by the opacity of the crown. For example, hemlock trees have slender crowns that are carried quite low to the ground and intercept nearly all available light. In contrast, red oak trees have shallow canopies that block much less light.
