The Controversy over HIV and AIDSThe contention of a small number of so-called "dissenters" that HIV is not the cause of AIDS has recently received international attention, thanks to South African President Thabo Mbeki's public questioning of the scientific evidence linking the virus to the disease. In 1994, Science correspondent Jon Cohen conducted a thorough examination of the arguments of the leading dissident, virologist Peter Duesberg. Science is making those articles available free of change in view of the serious public health implications of this debate. Volume 266 - 9 December 1994
