At the Koumassi clinic in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, researchers have conducted extensive studies of the willingness of pregnant women to receive free HIV testing and counseling, and, if they are infected, even free anti-HIV drugs to help lower their risk of transmitting the virus to their babies. To the dismay of the researchers, more than 30% of the women refused the testing, and only about 12% of the ones who turned out to be infected took advantage of the free drug offer.
