The University of Nairobi's Elizabeth Ngugi brings AIDS researchers together with hard-to-reach communities, such as the women at this Nairobi brothel. After passing around a copy of Science and explaining to these women why Malcolm and I were visiting, we watched Ngugi at work, answering far-flung questions about how to reduce their risk of becoming infected. At the end, I asked the women whether they had any questions for me. "Do you have prostitutes in the United States?" one woman asked. "Why would anybody do this job if they didn't have to?"
