Shortly after Etienne Karita and I first met at a posh Kigali hotel restaurant, I asked this reserved and dignified man whether he had lost anyone in the Rwandan genocide 6 years ago. "Many of my friends were killed," he said. I then asked whether any relatives had died. "My parents and eight brothers and sisters out of 11," he said. Later that day, I asked Karita what he says to people who ask him why he returned to his country with such a strong conviction to rebuild Rwanda's once-bustling AIDS research community. His reply: "I don't say anything."
