As Agnes Monifa stood in front of her shack in the Pumwani shantytown near Nairobi, Kenya, a local TV reporter did the voiceover for a story that she was preparing about this sex worker who, despite repeatedly being exposed to HIV, has not become infected. Monifa is one of several sex workers in Nairobi whose apparent resistance to infection is drawing international scientific attention for possible clues to vaccine development. When I mentioned this to her, she said "I'm ready to help people."
