AAAS Conversation on Science and Society

Dr. Joseph G. Gavin
AAAS Board Member 1988-1992
Emeritus Chief Operating Officer
Grumman Aerospace

Issues facing society:
  • Lack of long term view and commitment.
  • Poll-following rather than leadership.
  • Public lack of understanding of international economic competition.
  • Deficiencies in public education.
  • Population growth - competition for food, jobs, water, power, health care
Major issues for science (and technology)
  • Shaken public confidence -- the Baltimore and Collins cases
  • Confusion with respect to science, applied science, and engineering -- not a linear process.
  • Impact of human activity on climate and environment
  • How to advise public and government on priorities without seeming entirely self-serving
How should AAAS respond to issues facing science and engineering?
  • Provide seminars for congressional aides
  • Step into the void resulting from the elimination of OSTP -- not to duplicate NRC studies but to collect critical opinions quickly (this does not imply forming a consensus)
  • Arrange for AAAS members to testify before any appropriate forum -- not for AAAS but for themselves.
