COVER Comet Wild 2 as viewed by the Stardust spacecraft from a distance of 270 km (superposition of two images with different exposure times). The nucleus, 4.5 km in diameter, displays outflowing jets of gas and dust. Wild 2 spent billions of years in the outer solar system, but for the past 30 years it has resided between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. When closest to the Sun, it jets material into space at rates of thousands of kilograms per second. See page 1760. [Image: NASA Stardust Team]
