COVER The hippocampus has long fascinated scientists because of its involvement in learning and memory. Gene knockout studies now reveal an essential role of the LIM homeobox gene Lhx5 in its formation. Hybridization of brain sections with a marker for hipppocampal cells showed that postmitotic cells in an Lhx5-deficient mutant (bottom) failed to form the structures typical of the hippocampus in normal mice (top) (image width ~880 mm).
