A specimen of the deep-sea coral Desmophyllum cristagalli Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848. This 6.7-centimeter-high individual is from the collections at the Smithsonian Institution and was recovered in 1964 by the Eltanin from a depth of 550 meters in the southern Pacific Ocean. Coupled uranium series and radiocarbon ages from deep-sea corals provide information about the rate of ocean circulation and the timing of rapid climate change.
