Columns of neurons (dark blue) responding to a particular orientation
of visual stimuli were labeled by the
[
C]2-deoxyglucose method in a
cat with strabismus. Neurons (red dots) were labeled from a remote site
sharing the same orientation and ocular dominance by transport via
tangential connections. The match between the functional (dark blue) and
the anatomical (red dots) organization reflects the specificity of
cortical connections. See page
