Famous for hunting, rearing cubs, and defending their territory in groups, African lions are less egalitarian than previously assumed. When challenged by simulated intruders, some lions lead the charge while others lag behind. Although leaders recognize that their companions are lagging, they fail to punish them. Each individual has a particular style of behavior, but the variety of styles is quite broad, which is puzzling to current theories of cooperation.
