Apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the nervous system of the Drosophila sine oculis mutant. A retina and brain exhibiting excessive cell death during development of the visual system were stained with acridine orange to identify cells undergoing apoptosis (orange dots). The mechanism of programmmed cell death (see page 1445), along with the Fas system of triggering apoptosis (page 1449) and cell death in disease and therapy (page 1456), are examined in a trio of Articles focusing on apoptosis.
